A living tank on your desktop
Every Mokizen world can run as a live wallpaper: fish swim, plants sway and the tank light follows your local clock, from sunrise to a moonlit night. It is one link, free, and needs no account.
What is it?
A wallpaper link opens the tank full-screen with nothing else on it: no menus, no buttons, no ads, no sound. Wallpaper apps such as Lively Wallpaper (Windows), Plash (macOS) and Wallpaper Engine can show any web page behind your desktop icons, so the tank becomes your background.
It is built to stay light: 30 frames per second by default, a lower render resolution on very large screens, a pause whenever the desktop is covered, and an eco mode for laptops.

Set it up
Lively Wallpaper (Windows 10 and 11 · free, open source)
- Install Lively Wallpaper from its website or the Microsoft Store and open it.
- Click the + (Add wallpaper) button at the top of the library.
- Paste your Mokizen wallpaper link into the "Enter URL" box and press the arrow next to it.
- Lively shows a preview. Confirm, and the tank is added to your library and set as the wallpaper.
- Several monitors: open the screen layout button (top right) to pick one monitor, duplicate the tank on all of them, or span one tank across them.
- Recommended: in Settings > Performance, set "On battery" and "When another app is full-screen" to Pause.

Plash (macOS · free, on the Mac App Store)
- Install Plash from the Mac App Store. It lives in the menu bar (no Dock icon).
- Click the Plash icon in the menu bar and choose "Add Website…".
- Paste your Mokizen wallpaper link into the URL field, optionally give it a title, and click Add.
- The tank now sits behind your desktop icons. Use the menu bar icon to switch between saved websites or to pick the display in Settings.
- On a MacBook, add ?quality=eco to the link: Safari's engine does not report battery status, so the tank cannot switch to eco by itself.

Wallpaper Engine (Windows · paid app on Steam)
- Open Wallpaper Engine and click "Open Wallpaper" at the bottom left of the browser window.
- Choose "Open from URL", paste your Mokizen wallpaper link and confirm.
- The tank appears as a web wallpaper. It respects the FPS limit you set in Wallpaper Engine's settings.
- Recommended: in Settings > Performance, set "Other application focused" and "Other application fullscreen" to Pause.

Add options to the end of the link, for example mokizen.com/wallpaper/ryuboku?fps=15&quality=eco. The "Set as wallpaper" button on each world builds the link for you.

Tips
- Laptop or integrated graphics: use quality=eco, or fps=15, for the lightest load.
- Very large or several screens: the tank renders at a capped resolution and scales up, so a 4K screen costs about as much as a smaller one.
- Want no motion at all from the camera? Use cam=hero. If your system asks for reduced motion, the camera stays still and the creatures move slower automatically.
- The tank looks darker at night on purpose. Use cycle=off to keep it lit all day and night.
- Jellyfish tanks glow best at night, when the tank lamp is off.
Questions about battery, GPU and privacy
Will it drain my laptop battery?
It uses less than a game or a video call but more than a still image. The tank stops drawing whenever it is hidden or the app pauses it, and on battery it switches to eco mode by itself in Lively and Wallpaper Engine. On a Mac, add quality=eco to the link. For the lowest possible power, set your wallpaper app to pause on battery.
How much GPU does it use?
It depends on the tank and the screen. Dense moss and carpet tanks are the heaviest, open-water and jellyfish tanks the lightest. The default caps the frame rate at 30 fps and the render resolution at about 1440p. On integrated graphics (Intel Iris Xe, AMD Radeon laptop chips) use quality=eco.
Why is my fan spinning up?
Try quality=eco or fps=15 first. Also check that your wallpaper app pauses when a full-screen game or video runs. A 144 Hz monitor does not matter: the tank never draws faster than its fps setting.
Does it need an account or internet?
No account. The tank loads once from mokizen.com and then runs from memory. If the computer is offline at start-up, the page keeps retrying quietly until the network is back.
Does it collect data?
Only anonymous daily counters (for example how many wallpapers were opened), with no user id and no cookies, like the rest of Mokizen. No sound is played and nothing is downloaded to your computer.
Does it work on multiple monitors, ultrawide or portrait screens?
Yes. The camera re-frames the tank for any shape of screen. In Lively you can span one tank across several monitors or show it on each one.
Is it free?
Yes. All curated tanks and your own shared worlds work as wallpapers for free. Lively and Plash are free apps; Wallpaper Engine is a paid app on Steam.
