Java Fern care guide

Java Fern (Microsorum pteropus (syn. Leptochilus pteropus))

Microsorum pteropus (syn. Leptochilus pteropus) · Polypodiaceae

Java Fern (Microsorum pteropus (syn. Leptochilus pteropus)) is an aquatic plant. It belongs to the Polypodiaceae family. It is native to Tropical & subtropical Asia, from India, Nepal and southern China/Taiwan through Southeast Asia to New Guinea. It needs low to medium light. Water temperature: 20°C – 28°C. pH: 5.0 – 8.0. Care difficulty: Very Easy. Growth rate: slow.

How do you care for Java Fern?

LightLow to Medium (tolerates strong light, but very bright light can scorch leaves and feeds algae)
CO₂Not required (CO₂ boosts lushness)

pH5.0 – 8.0
PlacementAttached to driftwood or stone (never bury rhizome in substrate)

FamilyPolypodiaceae

How do you trim and propagate Java Fern?

Snip old, damaged or algae-covered fronds close to the rhizome; growth is slow, so a big trim is rarely needed (about once a year in many tanks). Propagate by cutting the rhizome into sections with several fronds each, or detaching the plantlets that form on leaf tips, margins and undersides once they have roots and a few leaves.

What problems affect Java Fern?

Regular brown/black dots or streaks in rows under mature fronds are spore cases (sporangia) — normal, not a disease. Genuine spreading dark patches and dying fronds point to a nutrient shortage (commonly blamed on low potassium); a soft, declining rhizome means it was buried; algae settles on the slow fronds under too much light.

How do you fix Java Fern problems?

Leave the spore dots alone; remove damaged fronds and dose a complete fertiliser; lift any buried rhizome onto wood or stone; lower the light, add faster-growing plants and algae grazers.

Where does Java Fern come from?

Tropical & subtropical Asia, from India, Nepal and southern China/Taiwan through Southeast Asia to New Guinea (on rocks and roots along streams) · Biotope regions: South-east Asia.
